Former Nigeria Premier Football League striker Sunday Adetunji has switched international allegiance to Sudan, opening a new chapter in the career of one of Nigerian club football’s most prolific forwards.
Adetunji, 26, currently plays for Al-Hilal Omdurman in Sudan and is now eligible to represent the Sudanese national team at the international level, having established himself in the country’s domestic football scene.
The forward made his only senior appearance for Nigeria on July 4, 2021, coming on as a substitute in a 4-0 friendly defeat to Mexico, and his switch of allegiance closes the door on any future involvement with the Super Eagles.
Adetunji began his professional career with Abia Warriors in 2017 before spells with Enyimba, Lobi Stars and Czech side Příbram. He later represented Lobi Stars, Plateau United, Abia Warriors and Rivers United in the NPFL before moving to North Macedonia to sign for KF Shkupi in August 2021.
His debut season in North Macedonia was exceptional, finishing as the league’s top scorer with 20 goals and helping Shkupi win their first-ever league title.
In September 2023, he moved to Serbian side FK Čukarički, marking his arrival with a spectacular goal on debut against Red Star Belgrade and winning a crucial penalty in the same match before eventually moving to Sudan.
