Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has announced that he is undergoing treatment for cancer, revealing the news in a social media statement while requesting privacy for his family.
The former Liverpool and Celtic striker said the diagnosis was initially intended to remain private, but was made public after an unintended social media post.
As reported by BBC Sport on Tuesday, Dalgish was quoted as saying, “I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well,” Dalglish wrote
He explained that the announcement was not planned and expressed regret that the situation had become public.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand,” he said. “Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.”
Dalglish also used the statement to thank medical staff supporting his care, praising their professionalism and discretion.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves,” he said.
The 75-year-old is widely regarded as one of British football’s greatest players. During his career, he scored 167 goals in 320 appearances for Celtic between 1969 and 1977 before joining Liverpool, where he made 515 appearances and became a club legend.
He also scored 30 goals in 102 appearances for the Scotland national football team.
Following the announcement, Liverpool issued a statement expressing support for their former player and manager.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said. “The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward.”
