Fenerbahçe presidential candidate Aziz Yıldırım is planning a personal trip to London to accelerate talks over Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as the Turkish club make the Fulham centre-back their top defensive target this summer, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Yıldırım, who served as Fenerbahçe president for two decades before stepping down in 2018 and is now seeking to return to the role, is expected to hold direct talks with Fulham executives and Bassey’s representatives during the visit.
He regards the 26-year-old as the ideal candidate for the left centre-back position and has placed him ahead of all other defensive targets in the club’s summer planning, with his scouting team fully aligned on that assessment.
The motivation behind the pursuit is as much tactical as it is political within Istanbul’s football landscape. Fenerbahçe have been unable to dislodge city rivals Galatasaray at the top of Turkish football in recent seasons, with Cimbom’s dominance fuelled in large part by the goals of Bassey’s Super Eagles teammate Victor Osimhen.
Bringing in a defender of Bassey’s calibre is seen within the club as a means of blunting that threat and ending Galatasaray’s run of consecutive Süper Lig titles. The symbolism of signing a direct Super Eagles colleague specifically to neutralise Osimhen will not be lost on either camp.
Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in a deal worth over €20m in 2023 and has since made over a century of appearances for the Cottagers, scoring four goals. He is contracted at Craven Cottage until June 2027, with Fulham also holding an option to extend that deal by a further year — a position that hands the Premier League side considerable leverage in any negotiations and means Fenerbahçe will need to table a convincing offer to move things forward.
The defender came through Leicester City’s academy before establishing himself at Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, his versatility across the defensive line, comfortable at both centre-back and left-back, is understood to be central to his appeal. Super Eagles striker Osimhen has himself previously named Bassey among Africa’s standout defenders, an endorsement that has only amplified his growing reputation.
Senegalese full-back Malick Diouf and Manchester City winger Savinho are also among the names on the club’s wider summer shortlist, though it is Bassey who remains Fenerbahçe’s clear priority. Whether Yıldırım can translate his personal intervention into a concrete agreement will depend heavily on Fulham’s willingness to negotiate, and the Cottagers, with the security of a long contract in their favour, are under no immediate pressure to sell.
