Chelsea boss, Xabi Alonso has been told to remove goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from his first-team lineup for next season, with claims that the Spaniard poses a ‘threat to his own team’.
Alonso is expected to officially assume his role as Chelsea’s manager in July after being appointed on a four-year contract.
The former Real Madrid coach arrives at Stamford Bridge with numerous issues to address following the Blues’ disappointing Premier League season, which saw them finish in tenth place and miss out on any European competition.
This summer is anticipated to bring further changes to Chelsea’s roster, with reports indicating that key players Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella are eager to seek transfers away from the club.
Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes that Alonso must adhere to his principles and make difficult decisions regarding his squad as the new season approaches.
“I think he should adhere to his rules and his own tactics,” Leboeuf told Metro.
“However, he will need to make choices. I don’t believe he can work with all the players currently at Chelsea. He needs to narrow it down to 25 players and manage that group, assessing how it functions with the best among them.”
One aspect of the squad likely to be evaluated again this summer is Chelsea’s goalkeeping options, following another inconsistent season from Robert Sanchez, the club’s primary choice.
Leboeuf is concerned that Alonso’s system may further highlight Sanchez’s weaknesses.
Speaking through BetGoodwin, he remarked, “I don’t like to suggest that anyone should leave. He’s a talented goalkeeper, but when it comes to his footwork, he poses a risk to his own team.
“When Donnarumma joined Manchester City, he faced a similar issue, and Pep Guardiola successfully adapted a new system to minimize Donnarumma’s reliance on his feet. So, it might be feasible.
“However, I’m uncertain if Alonso will be willing to alter his style for one player, which could lead to them seeking a replacement.
“I have a great admiration for Raya; he is among the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best at this moment, and he has demonstrated that during the Champions League.”
