Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has described the past year as a “crazy season” following the confirmation of his return to his parent Bayer Leverkusen from Werder Bremen at the end of his loan spell, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Nigerian forward is set to return to Bayer Leverkusen, where he still has two years remaining on his contract, after an injury-hit and frustrating campaign at Bremen.
Boniface endured a turbulent year that began with a failed move to AC Milan last summer.
Following the collapse of the transfer, Bayer Leverkusen — who were willing to let the striker leave after former coach Erik ten Hag deemed him surplus to requirements — sent him on loan to Werder Bremen in search of regular playing time.
The club also confirmed that the loan was to get him back in shape after being hampered by injury in the 2024/25 season.
However, the move did not go according to plan, as Boniface struggled to cement a starting role and was largely limited to substitute appearances.
His situation worsened in December when he suffered a knee injury that eventually required surgery.
Although the Super Eagles striker returned to full training last month, he has yet to make an appearance since recovering from the injury.
Ahead of Werder Bremen’s final game of the season against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, the club confirmed that Boniface would leave the Weserstadion and return to his parent club.
Reacting to the development, the Nigerian took to X, formerly Twitter, to thank the club’s fans, players and staff.
”Wow. Crazy season for me, a lot has happened. Just want to say thank you very much to fans and staff and players.”
Boniface now returns to Leverkusen with his future still uncertain after injuries disrupted the momentum he built during the club’s title-winning campaign two seasons ago.
He had made an initial return for his recovery from the knee injury but he linked up with Bremen again after he was passed fit to feature for the remainder of the season.
