The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has held its National Convention and primaries in Kano, issuing a strong warning to its members to be wary of President Tinubu’s alleged antics of seeking to perpetuate himself in power by all means.
“We call on our people to be vigilant because the mercenary politics that the nation’s generals used to undermine the June 12 election in the botched Third Republic has been perfected by the Tinubu regime,” the party’s National Chairman, Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, said.
Daudu, whose cabinet members were returned unopposed, said the PRP has made it clear that, unlike “marketers” who invite members of the ruling class to join the party as a springboard to power, politics is service and not a private enterprise.
He said that because of President Tinubu’s alleged hold-to-power syndrome, nearly all non-regime political parties are today battling with mercenaries as willing tools of government to subvert and weaken the collective political opposition in order to impose a dominant-party autocracy on the country.
“Therefore, under President Tinubu Nigeria has receded from consolidating democratic gains to enthroning autocracy under dominant-party rule; the APC, as the ruling party, is above the law,” he said.
Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu further stated that the separation of powers is allegedly non-existent, while the legislature functions as an appendage of the executive and the judiciary is increasingly seen as pliant to the regime.
“The state resources are today highly personalised; highly placed public office holders have become overnight billionaires. No one is afraid of the anti-corruption watchdogs, which have become toothless and impotent,” he stated.
The PRP chairman said they are not under any illusion that President Tinubu is willing to stay in power by all crooked means, adding that INEC is nowhere near ready to be an independent umpire under its present mercurial leadership.
Therefore, he said, what they intend to do is to ensure that their elected representatives in this convention and primaries will be foot soldiers in the continued struggle for freedom, social justice, and development in Nigeria.
