The management of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) on Tuesday condemned the recent physical assault on its personnel and the invasion of its office in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
In a statement issued by its Communications Officer, Blessing Tunoh, the company described the incident as unacceptable, stressing that attacks on staff carrying out lawful duties will not be tolerated.
According to the statement, the incident involved the forceful entry of suspected criminal elements into the company’s Biu office. The attackers reportedly assaulted staff, destroyed property, and set company vehicles ablaze.
YEDC further disclosed that several operational assets were stolen during the attack, including service cables, meters, computers, refrigerators, television sets, and other office equipment.
The company noted that such actions not only disrupt service delivery but also pose serious risks to electrical infrastructure and the safety of personnel. As a result of the incident, operations in Biu have been temporarily suspended.
Citing Section 220(1) of the Electricity Act 2023, YEDC emphasised that assaulting utility personnel and vandalising power infrastructure are criminal offences.
The company advised customers to channel complaints and grievances through established and lawful mechanisms, warning that acts of violence could force it to withdraw services from affected areas and pursue legal action against offenders.
YEDC reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient electricity services, while calling on stakeholders to support efforts to protect critical power infrastructure and personnel.
It added that the safety and wellbeing of its employees remain its highest priority.
