The Anambra State government has vowed to fish out the gunmen who killed two policemen and two civilians, saying that no stone would be left unturned in fishing out and dealing with their assailants.
Our correspondent gathered that the policemen and two civilians were ambushed and shot dead along the Amansea–Awa–Ufuma Road, located in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state, while in a convoy on Sunday night as they were returning from an assignment.
The attack involved the convoy of Chief Ben Nwankwo, the Chief of Staff to the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who had attended a function on behalf of the governor, was returning to Awka when the incident occurred.
Although, the Chief of Staff escaped unhurt, while some civilians in the entourage were injured in the gun duel that lasted several minutes.
According to eyewitnesses in the area, the assailants who had laid siege in a nearby bush, opened fire on them as soon as they approached, with the gunshots sending panic across the communities along the road.
However, in a press statement released on Tuesday, the state Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Law Mefor, said the state government expressed its shock over the attack and also condoled with the families of those who died and shared in their grief.
Mefor noted that the police and other security agencies are working to find and to bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice.
The statement read, “The Anambra State government is shocked by the attack on the convoy of the chief of staff to the governor on Sunday night, May 31, 2026, between 8pm and 9pm at the Orumba North–Awka South borders, while returning from an official assignment.
“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the Government and people of Anambra.
“Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice. The Anambra State Government sends its deepest condolences to the families of those who died and share in their grief.
“The police and other security agencies are working to find and to bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice.
“This isolated incident after more than one year of peace and security in the state will not affect our determination to remove all forms of crime from Anambra.”
