Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has said that a free, independent, and responsible media remains the cornerstone of any progressive society.
Mohammed made this known in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, while congratulating journalists in Bauchi State and across Nigeria on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, celebrated annually on May 3.
According to the statement, the governor, described as a seasoned media professional and long-standing advocate of responsible journalism, commended the resilience, courage, and professionalism of journalists who continue to uphold the principles of truth, accountability, and public enlightenment despite numerous challenges.
“Governor Mohammed commended the resilience, courage, and professionalism of journalists who continue to uphold the principles of truth, accountability, and public enlightenment,” Gidado said.
The governor also acknowledged the critical role of the media in strengthening democracy, promoting transparency, and fostering good governance.
“He emphasised that a free, independent, and responsible media remains the cornerstone of any progressive society,” the statement added.
Mohammed said, “As a government, we recognise and deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by journalists in ensuring that citizens are well-informed. Your commitment to truth and fairness contributes immensely to the growth and stability of our democracy.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a media-friendly environment in Bauchi State, assuring that journalists would continue to operate freely and responsibly without fear or intimidation.
The governor further urged media practitioners to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession by ensuring accuracy, objectivity, and promoting national unity in their reportage.
He also called on stakeholders to support and protect press freedom, describing it as a fundamental human right essential for sustainable development.
Mohammed encouraged journalists to remain steadfast in their duties while embracing innovation and professionalism in the evolving media landscape.
He wished journalists in Bauchi State and across Nigeria a successful World Press Freedom Day celebration.
