Barcelona have agreed a deal worth more than £69 million with Newcastle United for England forward Anthony Gordon.
As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, the two clubs had been in advanced negotiations in recent days and have now reached an agreement worth in excess of €80m for the 24-year-old winger.
The BBC said, “Gordon is expected to complete the final formalities of the move before linking up with his England team-mates for their training camp in the United States ahead of the World Cup.”
The BBC also reported that “Bayern Munich also held discussions with Newcastle over a possible transfer, but the German champions were unable to match the Premier League club’s valuation. Barcelona eventually submitted an offer acceptable to Newcastle.
“Newcastle were always determined to sell on their own terms, with chief executive David Hopkinson insisting earlier this year the club would only part with key players if the conditions were right.”
The Magpies were in a strong negotiating position given Gordon’s contract runs until 2030, but the deal will provide a major financial boost as the club looks to reshape its squad following a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League.
Part of the transfer fee will also go to Everton FC, who inserted a 15% sell-on clause when Gordon left his boyhood club for Newcastle in a deal worth up to £45m in 2023.
Gordon had emerged as the most likely of Newcastle’s leading players to leave this summer and was left on the bench for the club’s final four matches of the campaign, with head coach Eddie Howe already planning for the future.
Supporters briefly sang Gordon’s name following Newcastle’s final-day defeat at Fulham, in what now appears to have been his farewell appearance for the club.
