The Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi has emerged as the candidate of the Accord Party for Osun West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, while the lawmaker currently representing Ayedaade/Irewole/Isokan Federal Constituency, Olanrewaju Oladebo also secured the party’s reelection ticket.
The two lawmakers emerged through affirmation at primary elections held separately in Ikire on Friday and attended by delegates from the 10 local government areas in the Osun West Senatorial District.
The primaries were also witnessed by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and security operatives.
Leaders of the Accord Party in Osun West Senatorial District had earlier affirmed Oyewumi as the consensus candidate of the party in the 2027 polls, citing various achievements he recorded in his first term as the reason behind their resolve to allow him to seek another four years.
The delegates that gathered for the primary for the Federal Constituency also unanimously ratified the candidature of Oladebo, thereby allowing him to seek a second term in office.
Both Oyewumi and Oladebo were elected into the National Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2023, but they later defected to the Accord following crises that hit the national leadership of their erstwhile party.
The results of the primary elections were announced by the Chairmen of the Accord Party primary election committees for the West Senatorial and the Ikire Federal Constituency, Bolaji Opaoye and Isa Ojewale respectively.
In his acceptance speech, Oyewumi, who currently represents Osun West in the Senate, declared that the successful conduct of the party’s primaries was a validation of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s exceptional performance in office since coming on board.
Oyewumi also said the people of the state have resolved to re-elect Adeleke in the forthcoming governorship poll, adding that the support of his constituents for him, which has made it possible to seek another term, was a challenge for him to do more if reelected.
“The successful conduct of today’s primaries is historic. It speaks to how much both members of our party and the people of our respective constituencies believe in the government of Ademola Adeleke and the Accord Party.
“It is clear to everyone that we have delivered across all sectors and that will further reflect in the massive votes our people will use to return our Governor on August 15. We are ready and by the grace of God, we will win,” Oyewumi said.
Speaking in a similar vein, Oladebo, who lauded members of the Accord Party for their support for him, assured them that he will not betray the trust reposed in him.
Oladebo further said, “We are indeed grateful to our people. Their overwhelming support and massive endorsement speak to how well we have impacted them.
“We will not drop the ball. We will continue to work for them. I urge the people of Osun not to relent in their support for Mr Governor and us so that the good work can continue.”
The PUNCH reports that the chairman of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee, Bamidele Salam, had emerged as the consensus candidate of the Accord Party for North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
Salam, a two-term lawmaker, emerged through affirmation at the primary held in Ede on Friday.
