The Osun State Government has written to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone XI Headquarters, Osogbo, seeking police protection for council chairmen elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 22, 2025, local government election, to enable them to resume office.
The state government also urged the police to remove council chairmen elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress who are currently administering the local government areas.
A copy of the letter dated June 18, 2026, titled “RE: Osun Local Government Affairs; Need to Provide Security for Elected Officials and Local Government Staff,” was obtained on Thursday.
It was signed by counsel for the state government and the local government areas, Oluwabusola Oluwaniyi, of Musibau Adetunbi (SAN) & Co.
The government drew the attention of the police to the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, delivered on June 15, 2026, by Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi, which dismissed the tenure elongation suit filed by APC-elected chairmen.
It also stated that Governor Ademola Adeleke had directed the police to remove APC chairmen from council secretariats across the state to ensure the safety of local government staff and facilitate the resumption of duly elected chairmen from the February 22, 2025, election.
“It is to be mentioned that the sacked APC chairmen specifically prayed the court in their case to allow them continue in office, for the 2025 local government election to be voided, for the oath of office of the 2025 elected local government chairmen to be invalidated, to restrain the defendants not to remove them (sacked APC chairmen) from the council secretariats, and for the court to mandate the police to continue to provide security for them at the local government secretariats.
“All the reliefs specifically sought by them were expressly refused by the court, and their originating summons was dismissed in its entirety. A certified true copy of the enrolment order of the court is hereby attached.”
The government further stated that there was no court order staying the judgment or granting any injunction against its implementation, adding that the filing of an appeal did not constitute a stay of execution.
It, therefore, urged the police “to act accordingly by removing the illegal occupiers and ensuring safe resumption of duties of the duly elected officials.”
The PUNCH reports that the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo had earlier nullified the current set of executives and councillors administering the local government areas.
The APC-elected chairmen and councillors, who emerged from the October 15, 2022, local government elections conducted under the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, returned to office in February 2025 and have been running the councils since then.
Justice Demi-Ajayi delivered judgment in suit No. FHC/OS/CS/147/2025, filed by the chairmen and councillors seeking tenure elongation.
However, counsel for the sacked officials, Muhydeen Adeoye, had said they have filed an appeal against the judgment at the Court of Appeal, Akure Division.
