Ahead of the senatorial primary elections of the All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa State, youth leaders across the Nasarawa North Senatorial zone have thrown their weight behind a former deputy governor of the state, Silas Ali Agara, citing his track record and grassroots appeal.
Our correspondent reports that the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, is also seeking to get the ticket of the APC, therefore he will be contesting against Agara, who recently resigned his appointment as the Director General of the National Directorate of Employment to contest for the senatorial position.
The endorsement was announced on Friday in a communique issued at the end of a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in the Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
The meeting brought together tribal youth presidents and youth representatives from villages and electoral wards across the district.
The communique was jointly signed and presented to journalists by the President of Mada Youth, Augustine Gyobe, President of Eggon Youth, Ozeegee Haruna, the Rindre Youth President, Bashiru Hamidu and Arum Youth President, Labaran Musa.
The youth leaders described young people as “key drivers of democratic participation, peacebuilding, and socio-economic development” in both the district and Nigeria at large.
Arewa PUNCH reports that after deliberations on the leadership needs and developmental aspirations of the people, they resolved that Nasarawa North requires “visionary, accessible, and people-oriented representation” in the senate.
“We unanimously and collectively declare our full support for Dr. Silas Ali Agara, who is contesting for the position of Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District,” the communique stated.
The youth leaders said their support was based on Agara’s record of service, leadership experience, and commitment to grassroots development, as well as his vision for inclusive governance, education, economic opportunities, and sustainable community growth.
The youth leaders, therefore, pledged to mobilise across all local government areas, wards, and polling units to ensure active participation in the democratic process to back Agara and other credible candidates.
They collectively called on youths, political actors, and other stakeholders to uphold peace and unity before, during, and after the elections, while urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, women groups, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders to work together to promote credible leadership and sustainable development in the district.
“This communique represents the collective voice and shared aspiration of the youths of Nasarawa North Senatorial District for progressive representation, accountable governance, and a prosperous future for all,” the document concluded.
On his part, the senatorial aspirant, Dr. Silas Ali Agara, who was present at the meeting, expressed appreciation to the Nasarawa North youths for the vote of confidence, promising to be a worthy representative at the National Assembly if voted to represent them.
He added that his decision to join the race was to offer quality representation, given his grassroots connection with the people of the zone, and to continue with the legacies of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
