The Yobe State Police Command has rescued an abandoned newborn baby girl and arrested two suspected motorcycle thieves in separate operations across the state as part of an intensified crackdown on criminal activities.
The command said stolen motorcycles were also recovered during the operations carried out in different parts of the state.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the successes reflected the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention.
In one of the incidents, the police said a newborn baby girl, estimated to be one day old, was discovered abandoned in Kallalawa Village, Damaturu, on May 25, 2026.
“Operatives attached to A Division, Damaturu, rescued a newborn baby girl estimated to be one day old after she was discovered abandoned in Kallalawa Village,” the statement read.
The police disclosed that the infant was immediately taken to the Special Baby Care Unit of the Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, where doctors confirmed she was in stable condition.
“The child was thereafter handed over to the Social Welfare Department for proper care and protection, while investigations have commenced to trace the mother and determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment,” the command added.
In a separate operation, a 27-year-old resident of Kaliyari Fulani Settlement in Bursari Local Government Area reported the theft of his red KASEA motorcycle at the Garin Alkali Division.
The motorcycle was said to have been stolen along Gwiokura Road after the owner parked it near a shop.
“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives immediately swung into action and intensified surveillance operations,” the statement said.
The command said a 20-year-old suspect, Yusai Mamman of Belkol Fulani Settlement in Jakusko Local Government Area, was later arrested while riding the stolen motorcycle along Jakusko Road.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to stealing the motorcycle. Investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation,” the police said.
Similarly, operatives attached to the Fika Division arrested another suspect in connection with the theft of a red Boxer motorcycle valued at N400,000.
The police explained that the victim had conveyed a passenger from Maiduwa Village to Ngalda Town on May 23 when the suspect allegedly dispossessed him of the motorcycle.
“Following the swift dissemination of information to neighbouring communities and security operatives, coupled with support from local vigilante groups in Gulani LGA, one Mohammed Garba of Bursali Village in Gulani LGA was arrested in connection with the crime,” the statement added.
According to the police, the complainant positively identified the suspect, who also confessed to the offence.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Usman Jibrin, directed officers to sustain the ongoing crackdown on criminal activities across the state.
He also commended residents and vigilante groups for their support and cooperation with security agencies.
