Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a suspect for allegedly transporting military-grade ammunition concealed inside bags of garri along the Abuja–Kaduna highway.
The agency said the suspect was arrested during a routine patrol on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in Kaduna State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Abdullahi Hassan, was caught conveying a large quantity of ammunition hidden in fresh cassava granules, popularly known as garri.
“A large cache of military-grade ammunition was intercepted by NDLEA officers on patrol along Abuja-Kaduna highway,” the statement said.
The agency disclosed that a total of 1,989 rounds of RLA 7.62mm ammunition were recovered from the suspect.
“Abdullahi Hassan was arrested while transporting 1,989 rounds of ammunition carefully hidden inside bags of garri,” the statement added.
NDLEA said both the suspect and the recovered items had been handed over to another security agency for further investigation.
The arrest formed part of a series of operations carried out by the agency across the country over the past week.
