No fewer than 11 persons have lost their lives in a lone accident that occurred at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos expressway on Sunday night.
The accident involved a gold Toyota vehicle registered as GGE722KJ which somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi, said a team from the Itori unit was immediately deployed to the scene.
Ogunjobi stated that the tragic incident claimed the lives of all occupants of the vehicle as the doors were locked upon the impact.
“All 11 people on board (10 adult males and 1 adult female) lost their lives in the crash.
“The Incident: A gold Toyota with registration GGE722KJ somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact.”
The Sector Commander disclosed that the FRSC personnel, with help from the local community, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies and deposited the corps at the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo.
He blamed the cause of the crash to Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Overloading (OVL), and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.
Meanwhile, Ogunjobi advised motorists and travelers on the Abeokuta-Lagos route to exercise extreme caution, especially when driving at night.
