Actress, Omobewaji Oyediji, popularly known as Mo Bewa, has said that despite the progress made in the Nigerian film industry, female actors are still often confined to stereotypical roles.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, the actress acknowledged that the portrayal of women in Nollywood has improved significantly over the years but noted that certain limitations persist.
“Female roles in Nollywood have evolved significantly over the years. We are seeing more women portrayed as leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians and complex characters with depth and agency. However, some stereotypes still exist, especially in certain genres where women are often boxed into predictable roles. The industry is making progress, but there is still room for more diverse and authentic female representation,” she said.
Mo Bewa noted that while conversations around representation continue to gain momentum, filmmakers must remain committed to creating characters that reflect the realities and complexities of modern women.
The actress also addressed the growing emphasis on physical appearance in the entertainment industry, saying, “Physical appearance has always played a role in the entertainment industry, but talent remains the foundation of a successful acting career. While social media and visual branding have increased the focus on aesthetics, audiences ultimately connect with strong performances and compelling storytelling. The most respected and enduring actors are those who consistently deliver excellent work, regardless of trends.”
On the financial realities of acting, Mo Bewa explained that success in the profession often extends beyond appearing on screen.
“It depends on an actor’s level, consistency, and business strategy. For established actors who work regularly and have built strong personal brands, acting can provide a comfortable lifestyle. However, many actors diversify their income through endorsements, entrepreneurship, content creation, and other ventures. The industry has grown, but financial stability often comes from combining acting with other opportunities,” she stated.
Reflecting on her own journey, the actress admitted that there were times she felt qualified for roles she did not get but said those experiences ultimately strengthened her resolve.
“Like many actors, there have been moments when I felt I was a strong fit for a role but wasn’t selected. However, I have learnt that casting decisions involve many factors beyond talent alone. Rather than dwelling on missed opportunities, I focus on continuous growth, improving my craft, and trusting that the right roles will come at the right time. Every experience has helped shape my journey and prepared me for future opportunities,” she added.
