The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, in collaboration with the Adamawa State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development and the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board, has unveiled the Revised National Teacher Policy aimed at strengthening teaching standards and improving education delivery in the state.
The initiative, held in Yola on Wednesday, was organised under the European Union–UNESCO programme tagged: “Education and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria (Phase II): Expand, Integrate and Strengthen Systems (EISS) to Build Teachers’ Capacity and Resilience.”
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Umar Pella, Mr. Simnawa S. Geofry said the government remains committed to improving the education sector.
“This ministry remains committed to working with partners to strengthen educational planning, policy implementation, and service delivery in Adamawa State,” he said.
On his part, the Executive Chairman of ADSUBEB, Murtala Umar Babayi, represented by Hon. Adiel Kurdah pledged sustained collaboration with development partners.
“We are ready to collaborate with UNESCO and other development partners to reposition the education sector and improve the quality of teaching and learning,” he said.
Presenting the policy framework, Mr. Godwin C. Egbunefu, the Deputy Director at the Federal Ministry of Education, said the reforms were designed to modernise the teaching profession.
“The revised policy focuses on continuous professional development, improved welfare, digital literacy, inclusiveness, and resilience. It is designed to reposition the teaching profession and equip educators with the skills required to meet modern learning demands,” he said.
Mr. Hyelataina Bernard, the Technical Lead of the EISS–EU Project at UNESCO, led the technical sessions and guided stakeholders on implementation strategies across relevant agencies, alongside the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
Dignitaries at the event included the Executive Secretary of the Post Primary Schools Management Board, Mr. Penuel Birsam; ADSUBEB Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Calvin Kubsa; Education State Facilitator, Malam Kabiru Ibrahim; as well as representatives of federal and state colleges of education and other stakeholders.
Organisers described the policy as a major milestone in strengthening education delivery in Adamawa State.
“It is a significant step toward improving the quality of teaching and learning, ensuring that teachers in Adamawa State are better prepared to address emerging challenges in education,” they pointed out.
