Yes, Nigeria’s presidential election is seven months away and the campaigns, should there be any, have not begun. But today, I will tell you how it will play out and who will win. First, let us recall that Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the contest in 2023 on a nationally embarrassing record-low 26.72% voter turnout. Of that, he received just 36.61% (8,794,726 votes), the lowest winning share in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. He is ruling Nigeria on less than nine million votes. That happened because a fragmented opposition split the anti-incumbent majority three ways. But Atiku Abubakar (29.07%), Peter Obi (25.40%) and…
A governorship aspirant in the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Abayomi Hunye, speaks with OLUFEMI ADEDIRAN on his decision to challenge the outcome of the party’s primary election based on his conviction for fairness, internal democracy, and the Yewa agenda you have been one of the most consistent politicians in the State since 1999. I would not describe it as marginalisation in the convention al sense, but it is obvious that certain interests have consistently enjoyed more opportunities than others. Since 1999, I…

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, giving occupants 72 hours to vacate the area ahead of a planned enforcement exercise. Mr Sanwo-Olu announced the directive on Saturday after leading the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Surulere Local Government Area alongside his wife, Ibijoke. He said enforcement officials would begin clearing the structures next week, describing the occupation of the highway median as illegal and incompatible with the purpose of the multi-billion-naira road corridor. The governor explained that the exercise would cover the stretch from…
The death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to at least 1,430 people, the President of the country’s National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, said on Saturday. CNN reports that Rodríguez also disclosed that at least 3,238 people have been injured, and 3,142 families have lost their homes. The lawmaker added that the country had experienced at least 430 aftershocks in the wake of the two main earthquakes. The twin, magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes, hit the South American country on Wednesday, devastating the coastal area around La Guaira. With a scarcity of government rescue teams, Venezuelans have become desperate…

In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the victims were abducted from their farms, but a distress call to the police led to their rescue. According to Ikoedem, the victims were rescued on Thursday at about 8:20 p.m. following a distress call reporting that 11 persons had been kidnapped from their farms. “The operatives of Iyahmo Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, swiftly embarked on a rescue operation within…
I did not travel to Ekiti last Saturday, but the dispatches from the frontlines were chilling. News outlets reported it, and Dr Marcel Mbamalu, the distinguished communication scholar and publisher of Prime Business Africa, confirmed that the Nigerian democratic project has reached a new, quantifiable nadir. “The price of democracy was N15,000 last Saturday,” Mbamalu observed. “Governor Biodun Oyebanji bought 319,224 of them.” While INEC officials hailed the poll as peaceful and the BVAS machines hummed with efficiency, the landslide victory concealed an uglier tally: voters were paid between N10, 000 and N15, 000 to display their marked ballots. Party…
