Concerns are mounting among rail passengers and freight operators following indications that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) may review fares across its passenger and cargo services as surging operating costs put increasing pressure on its finances. The development comes just hours after the expiration of the Federal Government’s 50 per cent Eid-el-Kabir train fare discount, a temporary measure introduced to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the festive season. The NRC…
The defection of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) last month has reshaped Nigeria’s political contest, particularly in the North-west geopolitical zone. This region has been a stronghold of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where it has won the presidential and most governorship elections since 2015. The rapid realignment involving Messrs Obi and Kwankwaso thwarted the opposition’s initial grand plan to present a united opposition against President Bola Tinubu for the January 2027 presidential election. In April, opposition leaders made the “Ibadan Declaration” at an event hosted by…
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of excessive and unrealistic bail conditions being imposed by courts and law enforcement agencies across the country. In a statement, NBA President Afam Osigwe said bail conditions should not defeat the constitutional purpose of granting temporary freedom to accused persons while awaiting trial. He stressed that bail is intended to ensure that defendants appear in court and should not be used as a form of punishment before a verdict is reached. “Bail is neither a punishment nor a mechanism for imposing pre-trial incarceration by…

Politics and name-calling have always enjoyed a close relationship. And in every democracy, labels are often deployed as political weapons long before policies and performance enter the conversation. Aspirants are routinely defined by their opponents before they are assessed by the electorate. But if democracy is to retain its essence, citizens must resist the temptation to inherit political prejudices without scrutiny. The duty of the voter, the writer, and indeed every stakeholder is not to cheer blindly from partisan corners but to interrogate claims, separate rhetoric from reality, and insist that public office remains a contest of ideas, competence, and…
