Rising food prices may soon top energy costs as the chief driver of inflation across emerging markets, with African economies likely to be worst hit, according to a new report by S&P Global Ratings. “Food prices are likely to start heading higher in the coming months,” the ratings agency said in the report published on Wednesday, noting that fertiliser prices have surged sharply on account of supply constraints. The Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City on Wednesday sentenced five persons to death by hanging for their involvement in the abduction and murder of a legal practitioner, Iyoha Osobase. Nigeria’s crude oil production rose above its Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries production quota in May 2026, with the country recording its highest crude output in 15 months amid improved operational stability and the absence of major disruptions across key oil facilities.
