The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed grave concerns over recent demolitions in Lagos State and the closure of Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State. Tony Ojukwu, NHRC’s executive secretary, said both actions have serious human rights implications. He therefore called for “an immediate halt to demolitions to pave way for meaningful consultation with affected communities, and provision of adequate resettlement and compensation” for the demolitions in Lagos State. Over 400 pineapple farmers in the Aduhanhan community in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area have protested over the alleged plan by the Edo State government to illegally evict them from their farmlands for a palm oil investor. Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has approved the training and deployment of 3,000 vigilantes across the state to strengthen community protection and support overstretched conventional security agencies. The governor disclosed this on Tuesday while inspecting 500 vigilantes and hunters undergoing a refresher tactical training programme in Kalgo Local Government Area.
