New Horizons Nigeria has integrated the Chinese language, Mandarin, into its Information and Communication Technology curriculum, offering students a strategic advantage in the global technology market.
The initiative positions Nigerian students to engage effectively in China-driven industries, trade, and innovation, the ICT firm said on Sunday.
New Horizons Nigeria, a leading ICT training and solutions provider, said the programme is designed to equip students with language and cultural skills essential for the rapidly evolving global labour market. With over 80 per cent of global consumer products manufactured in China, proficiency in Mandarin is increasingly seen as a competitive edge for technology professionals.
According to Tim Akano, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of New Horizons Systems Solutions Limited, the programme goes beyond traditional language learning.
“The global labour market is shifting, with China emerging as a central player in technology and trade. Early proficiency in Mandarin will give Nigerian tech experts a significant advantage in joining local and international companies,” he said in a statement.
The initiative includes a Mandarin Scholarship Programme, launched in partnership with China Advancement Opportunity. One hundred top students from five Nigerian secondary schools, Startrite School, Lightway School, British Nigerian Academy, Honeyland Schools, and Great Heights School, will undergo a three-month intensive online Mandarin course.
The top 20 performers will receive scholarships valued at $2,500 each for a one-year pre-degree Mandarin and cultural immersion programme in China, with the opportunity to advance to full university scholarships.
Participating schools are required to meet strict academic and attendance standards, including minimum 85 per cent participation, stable internet connectivity, and a conducive learning environment.
Beyond students, New Horizons Nigeria is offering Mandarin executive lessons for business professionals to enhance communication with Chinese partners, reflecting the country’s growing economic ties with China.
The pilot programme will be expanded to all New Horizons retail centres, making Mandarin an elective ICT course accessible to a broader range of learners. The initiative will culminate in a Mandarin Cultural Fiesta, bringing together students, educators, and distinguished guests from Nigeria and China to celebrate achievement and cross-cultural exchange.
