New Coventry City midfielder Frank Onyeka has set his sights on gaining promotion back to the Premier League with the Championship leaders after joining them on loan from Brentford, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Coventry City announced the signing of the midfielder on Monday in one of the deadline-day moves of the January transfer window.
The deal includes an obligation to buy should the club achieve promotion to the Premier League, and the 28-year-old is ready to embrace the challenge.
“I’m very happy to be here. I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates,” Onyeka told the club’s website.
“My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again.
“I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”
Coventry and Brentford held talks over the player’s transfer, moving ahead of several rivals, including Birmingham City and Sheffield United, in the pursuit of the central midfielder.
He is understood to be highly rated by Coventry coach Frank Lampard as the Sky Blues chase Premier League promotion.
Coventry currently sit at the top of the Championship table with 58 points, level with Middlesbrough but ahead on goal difference.
The 28-year-old has plied his trade at the Gtech Community Stadium since the summer of 2021, making 75 Premier League appearances for the Bees and 87 in all competitions.
He helped establish the West London club in the top flight and played a key role in their ninth-place finish in the 2022/23 season, their highest in the Premier League era.
The powerful midfielder also has 41 caps for Nigeria and was a key part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished third.
Before that, Onyeka began his career in Denmark with Midtjylland.
His time with the Danish outfit was highly successful, as he won two Danish Superliga titles and the 2018/19 Danish Cup, while also featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
Last season, he enjoyed a loan spell in the Bundesliga with Augsburg, where he made 31 appearances in Germany’s top division.
