Nigerian defender and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Kenneth Omeruo has advised the Super Eagles to approach their second group game at the ongoing 2025 AFCON against Tunisia with caution, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Nigeria and Tunisia will renew their rivalry at the continental championship on Saturday at the 40,000-capacity Fez Stadium in Morocco, in what promises to be a top-of-the-table Group encounter.
Both teams began their campaign on winning notes. The Super Eagles beat Tanzania 2-1 last week, with Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman finding the net, while the Carthage Eagles outclassed Uganda 3-1 in their opener.
A win for either side on Saturday will guarantee them a spot in the round of 16, but Omeruo, who was part of Nigeria’s triumphant 2013 AFCON squad, has cautioned the Super Eagles against complacency.
“It’s an important game. If we win, we go into the next round, but we have to be careful because Tunisia are more technical than our last opponents,” Omeruo told PUNCH Sports Extra.
“We will always play to win, but I don’t expect anything short of good football as well.”
The 31-year-old defender knows what it takes to succeed at the Africa Cup of Nations, having been part of Stephen Keshi’s legendary squad that won the 2013 tournament in South Africa.
During that campaign, Omeruo was a rock at the heart of Nigeria’s defence alongside Elderson Echiéjilé, Joseph Yobo, and Godfrey Oboabona, helping the Super Eagles keep crucial clean sheets on their way to lifting the trophy.
Nigeria’s victory that year remains one of the nation’s most cherished football moments, and Omeruo’s experience from that triumph lends weight to his warning about the Tunisia challenge.
