Coventry City and Brentford have reached an agreement over the loan signing of Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka, with the move set to be completed subject to final formalities, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The deal was confirmed on Sunday by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who disclosed that all parties had agreed on a temporary move that could become permanent at the end of the season.
Romano announced the development on social media, stating, “Frank Onyeka to Coventry City from Brentford, deal agreed between all parties and here we go! Loan with view to permanent move in the summer.”
Further details of the agreement indicate that the switch is closely tied to Coventry’s promotion push in the Championship.
According to Sky Sports, the structure of the deal includes a condition that would make the transfer permanent should Coventry secure promotion.
“The deal is expected to be an initial loan with an obligation to buy if Coventry go up,” Sky Sports reported.
Onyeka, aged 28, has been considering his next move after struggling for regular minutes at Brentford this season.
He has featured in just six Premier League matches and has not started any, with head coach Keith Andrews favouring other midfield options.
His limited involvement came despite returning recently from international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he made four starts for Nigeria and played 119 minutes in their semi-final defeat to Morocco.
The midfielder spent last season on loan at Augsburg in Germany, making 34 appearances, and remains under contract with Brentford until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option for an additional year.
Brentford, however, have been open to allowing him leave five years after his arrival from Midtjylland.
Coventry have been working to strengthen their squad as they battle at the top of the Championship under Frank Lampard.
The Sky Blues remain joint-top of the table on goal difference after a recent dip in form, including a 2-1 defeat away to QPR, while Middlesbrough closed level on points following a 1-0 win over Norwich.
Championship rivals Birmingham City and Sheffield United had also shown interest in Onyeka, but Coventry have now moved ahead to secure the midfielder as they intensify their promotion bid.
