The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has boosted the ranks of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State with the defection of two prominent members of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
The defectors are Special Assistant to the Governor in the Office of the Head of Service, Umar Haruna, and Organising Secretary of the NNPP in Bichi Ward, Bichi Local Government Area, Muhammad Hussaini.
Haruna, appointed in September 2023, also tendered his resignation from the Kano State Government, citing his commitment to integrity, accountability, and democratic values.
In a resignation letter dated December 22, 2025, addressed to Governor Abba Yusuf through the Secretary to the State Government, Haruna formally communicated his decision to step down.
According to a statement on Friday by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, the two NNPP/Kwankwasiyya leaders officially joined the APC during a courtesy visit to Barau in Abuja.
The defectors reportedly praised Barau’s leadership style and people-centered politics, describing him as “an icon and a beacon of hope for Kano State.”
Welcoming them into the party, Barau said their decision reflects growing public confidence in the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu.
Barau, who also serves as the first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, noted that the NNPP’s influence in Kano is waning amid a wave of defections.
“You are welcome to the people’s party, the APC. You have joined at a time when our people are trooping in daily to be part of our movement to restore the glorious days of Kano,” he said.
He added, “By the grace of Allah, Kano will bounce back for the good of all, not just a few individuals and their families.”
