One of the prayers that took me many years to understand while growing up is the one that says, “May we not travel on the day the roads are famished.” My initial confusion stemmed from the fact that I could not understand how non-living things like roads could be hungry. It took the intervention of an elderly person to explain that the prayer originated from the belief that accidents occur when a road is “hungry for blood”.
