Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has on Friday signed the ₦758.7 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fast-tracking development across all sectors of the state.
The budget, christened the “Budget of Socio-Economic Expansion,” is designed to stimulate sustainable growth, expand infrastructure, and improve the living standards of residents.
Speaking shortly after assenting to the bill, Governor Aliyu commended the Sokoto State House of Assembly for its swift and diligent consideration of the budget proposal.
“I assured the people of the state that implementation would commence immediately to guarantee the timely execution of government projects and programmes.
“The 2026 budget places strong emphasis on sectors that directly impact the wellbeing of citizens.
“Of the total allocation, 41 per cent is dedicated to the economic sector, 37 per cent to the social sector, while 16 per cent, amounting to ₦122.73 billion, is earmarked for health.
“Key health interventions include the completion of the Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital, Kasarawa; Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital; and the upgrading of general hospitals in Binji, Tambuwal, and Sabon Birni”
He said the budget also provides for the procurement of 21 ambulances to strengthen emergency medical services across the state.
“The education sector received ₦115.95 billion, targeted at improving teaching and learning conditions, rehabilitating schools, and expanding infrastructure in tertiary institutions. Agriculture was allocated ₦18.74 billion to boost food production and enhance food security”
Governor Aliyu described the budget as strongly development-driven, noting that 72 per cent is allocated to capital expenditure, while 28 per cent is set aside for recurrent spending, in line with recommendations by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
He further disclosed that ongoing and completed projects under his administration were financed without borrowing, keeping Sokoto State debt-free.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, praised the Governor’s policy direction, describing the budget as people-oriented and capable of accelerating socio-economic growth. He assured that the legislature would provide robust oversight to ensure prudent and effective implementation.
With the signing of the 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, the Sokoto State Government has reiterated its commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline, and inclusive development, with expectations that the budget will significantly boost the state’s economy and improve the welfare of its people.
