The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of one Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and 26,119 inspectors following its third plenary meeting on 29 January.
In a statement issued by the commission, Funsho Adegboye, an AIG, was elevated to the rank of DIG.
The decision was ratified under the leadership of the PSC chairperson, Hashimu Argungu, a retired DIG.
Also promoted are Commissioners of Police Danjuma Aboki and Dansabo Idi, who were elevated to the rank of AIG after “a merit-based process” that included written examinations and oral interviews conducted by the commission.
In what the PSC described as a landmark decision, the commission further approved the promotion of 26,119 Inspectors to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police II (ASP II). The promotions followed their performance in the recently concluded Departmental Selection Board Examination.
About the promoted officers
Before his promotion, Mr Adegboye served as the AIG in charge of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He has had a long career across key departments including Operations, Training, and Administration, and has served as Divisional Police Officer, Area Commander in Ijero and Ile-Ife.
He was a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Ondo State, and Commissioner of Police, Force Intelligence Department, and Edo State Command.
He has also served on United Nations missions in Kosovo, Liberia, Timor, and Somalia.
Mr Aboki was, until his elevation, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Imo State Police Command.
Mr Idi previously served as the Acting AIG, Research and Planning at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. His career spans several operational and command positions, including Divisional Police Officer roles in Kebbi and Kaduna states, Officer-in-Charge of the Criminal Investigation Branch in Kebbi, Area Commander in Yauri, Owo, Awe, and Kosoboso, Commander of the 63 PMF Ikorodu, Deputy Commissioner of Operations for Zone 1 Lagos, Commandant of the Police College Kaduna, and Commissioner of Police, Investment, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Congratulating the promoted officers, PSC boss Argungu reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency and merit-based promotions.
“These promotions reflect our dedication to recognizing hard work, competence, and integrity. They are a call to higher responsibility, greater service, and renewed commitment to the safety and security of our nation,” he said.
He also commended the PSC Standing Committee on NPF Matters, led by Taiwo Lakanu, a retired DIG, and other board members for their diligence during the examination and interview processes.
The PSC stated that it remains committed to its mandate of overseeing human resource management within the Nigeria Police Force, with the goal of building a professional, efficient, and service-driven police institution.
