The Edo State Police Command has arrested two suspected kidnappers during patrol along the Auchi–Igarra Highway in Edo North, authorities said on Wednesday.
In a statement by the state command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, on Wednesday, the suspects were identified by a vigilante member as members of a kidnapping syndicate.
“The Edo State Police Command has recorded significant successes in the fight against kidnapping through proactive patrols and sustained intelligence-led operations in Igarra and its environs, in line with the crime-fighting strategies of the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc,” the statement read.
According to the statement, on 28 January 2026, at about 13:30 hours, operatives of the Igarra Area Command arrested Muhammed Muamadu Haru ‘M’, 35, and Abubakar Muhammed Haruna ‘M’, 25, while on duty at their traditional nipping point along the highway.
“The suspects were identified by a vigilante member as members of a kidnapping syndicate during an exchange of fire in one of the joint bush-combing rescue operations.
“Upon recognition, the suspects attempted to escape into the bush but were quickly intercepted and arrested. Investigation is ongoing,” the statement added.
In a related development on Monday, 2 February 2026, at about 17:00hrs, a motorcycle patrol convoy from the Igarra Area Command foiled another kidnapping attempt along the Auchi–Igarra Express Road.
The patrol intercepted three suspected kidnappers who were about to block the road. The suspects fled into the forest, abandoning items believed to be logistics for criminal operations, including food, mobile phones, jack knives, and other personal effects. Bush-combing operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism, reassuring the public of the command’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through established emergency lines.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that 13 suspected kidnappers and vandals were arrested while three abductees were rescued. Edo State Police PPRO explained that the operations are part of sustained security measures ordered by CP Monday Agbonika to dismantle criminal networks and deny offenders safe haven.
