The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, has emphasized the need to address the indiscriminate parking of some Dangote trucks on major roads in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.
Elemide advised the management of Dangote Cement, Ibese Plant, to create trailer parks, noting that it would help prevent accidents and ease movement.
The Speaker spoke on Wednesday during the 4th edition of the company’s annual Community Day held in Ibese.
He noted that the company is meant to be a blessing in the state and not a disturbance, saying, “They should live and let us live.”
While appreciating the company for providing jobs for Nigerian youths, Elemide opined that it has helped reduce the Japa syndrome affecting the country.
He said, “The only thing I give to Dangote is in the area of employment. If all our rich people and billionaires can stay in Nigeria and have initiatives like this, I know that the Japa syndrome will be reduced. I give that to Dangote, that is, in the area of employment.
“But I want to say this to Dangote: I want you to be more environmentally friendly. When we were coming with my colleague, I said, look at all the trailers parked along the road. With all the land, with all the money, with all the profits Dangote is making, can’t they have a trailer park?”
He advocated for sustainable development and urged the company to be more environmentally conscious, emphasizing that since the state has created a favorable environment, they should make it conducive for the host communities.
Responding, the Head of Social Performance at Dangote Cement, Ademola Ojolowo, disclosed that the company is already constructing a trailer park that would help resolve the challenge of indiscriminate truck parking.
Ojolowo stated that, compared to the past, the situation had improved, stressing that the company remains committed to enhancing project efficiency, ensuring sustainability, and fostering strong partnerships with communities and government stakeholders.
He hinted that 10 developmental projects have been fully completed this year with host communities, while 13 others are ongoing.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Community Development, Ademola Balogun, and the Chairman of Yewa North Local Government, Olusola Akinbode, challenged the company to maintain and grow its infrastructure investments throughout the host communities and encouraged recipients of the empowerment programs to take full advantage of the opportunities for their economic advancement.
Meanwhile, the Aboro of Ibeseland, Oba Rotimi Mulero, appealed for better placement of deserving members of the host community in job roles that are more suitable to their qualifications.
