The Niger State House of Assembly has sounded the alarm regarding the worsening water crisis in Minna and other major towns, urging the state government to take urgent action.
Hon. Yakubu Abdulmalik Bala, the member representing Katcha Constituency, presented a motion during plenary highlighting the dire situation.
He cited obsolete water infrastructure, poor maintenance, and insufficient supply as some of the primary challenges confronting the sector.
Bala argued that access to safe and potable water is fundamental to human survival, public health, sanitation, and socio-economic development.
He warned that the absence of a coordinated and sustainable short-, medium-, and long-term strategy to address water supply challenges would continue to deepen hardship and public dissatisfaction.
He also cautioned, “Delays in decisive intervention could escalate the situation into a full-blown public health and social emergency.”
Against this background, and after extensive deliberations, the House unanimously adopted all the prayers of the motion.
The House called on the Executive Arm of Government to expedite action on short-, medium-, and long-term sustainable solutions to the persistent water shortage affecting Minna and other major towns in Niger State.
They also noted the need for urgent interventions, including youth empowerment through water trucking businesses, the rehabilitation of dysfunctional boreholes, and other temporary water supply measures.
