Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has directed the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi and the Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, to monitor the daily attendance of newly recruited teachers in the state.
Otti gave the directive during his media chat on Thursday and also asked the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) to monitor the teachers.
The directive followed a report by a television reporter, who alleged that some of the 5,394 teachers employed in 2025 now go to work only twice a week.
According to the report, absenteeism among the newly recruited teachers was most prevalent in schools located in Umuahia South Local Government Area.
Responding to the report, Governor Otti directed the relevant agencies to investigate the matter, stressing that teachers must be on duty every working day in line with the full-time nature of their employment.
Acting on the governor’s directive, the Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, stormed some schools in the state on Friday without prior notice to the school management.
During the unscheduled visits, Nwosu warned teachers that anyone who violates the terms of their employment would face disciplinary action.
