Operatives of the Zamfara State Police Command have arrested two suspected gunrunners and recovered two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles during a stop-and-search operation along the Gusau–Funtua Highway.
The suspects, identified as Samaila Na’ibi and Samaila Aminu, were arrested at a checkpoint between Kotorkoshi and Tazame by operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol attached to the Command’s Department of Operations.
Police said the duo was intercepted in a Golf vehicle with registration number ABUJA KUJ 893 CK, where the rifles were found concealed inside a sack.
Na’ibi was said to be a resident of Kuya Village in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, while Aminu, who was driving the vehicle, is from Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the suspects and the recovered weapons were immediately taken to the Kotorkoshi Divisional Police Headquarters.
He added that the suspects and exhibits would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Maikaba, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal arms and urged residents to provide useful information to support security efforts across the state.
