The Ekiti State Police Command has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a middle-aged man, identified simply as Segun, who allegedly took his life after attempting to kill his daughter in Ise Ekiti, Ise/Orun Local Government Area of the state.
Sources in the community said the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
The man was said to have attempted to slit the throat of his 12-year-old daughter before allegedly hanging himself on a tree behind their residence.
A resident, Mr Patrick Abayomi, told PUNCH Metro that the scene attracted neighbours after cries and unusual noises were heard from the house.
“People around said they were alerted by noise from the house early this morning. When they got there, they saw the lifeless body of the man dangling from a tree,” he said.
According to him, the injured girl was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is reportedly responding to treatment.
“They quickly took the girl to the hospital to save her life. We learnt she is responding to treatment,” Abayomi added.
Some residents described the development as shocking, noting that the motive behind the incident remains unclear.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and said the command had begun a full investigation.
In a text message to PUNCH Metro, Abutu said, “The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident.”
He added that the police would unravel the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
