Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has pledged the support of the state government to traders affected by the fire at Singer Market, which destroyed goods worth hundreds of millions of naira.
The governor’s pledge was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Sunusi DawakinTofa, following the incident that occurred early Monday.
Yusuf described the fire as unfortunate and distressing, noting that the government shared in the pain and losses suffered by the affected business owners.
He assured the traders that the state government would not abandon them in their moment of need and would work with relevant stakeholders to cushion the impact of the losses.
“Governor Yusuf sympathises with the affected business community of Singer Market and assures them of the government’s solidarity and support following the fire incident,” the statement read.
The governor said the state government would explore practical ways of assisting the affected traders, in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders.
He also directed the Kano State Fire Service and other security agencies to intensify fire prevention measures and public enlightenment campaigns in markets and other commercial centres across the state.
In addition, Yusuf urged traders and business owners to adhere strictly to safety guidelines, particularly in the handling of electrical installations and equipment that could trigger fire.
He prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the victims strength and replace their losses with better opportunities, while preventing a recurrence of similar incidents in the state.
Recall that the early-morning fire at the popular Singer Market destroyed three major stores, resulting in significant loss of goods and property worth millions of naira.
