A disaster was averted on Sunday morning after personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps responded swiftly to a lone fuel tanker crash at NEPA Roundabout along Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when a loaded tanker fell at the busy roundabout, raising fears of a possible fire outbreak and secondary crashes in the area.
According to the FRSC, the Kaduna Sector Command received a distress call at about 7:15 a.m. reporting the fallen tanker.
“At about 0715HRS, the Sector Command received a distress call reporting a fallen fuel tanker at the location,” the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said in a statement.
According to the statement, a rescue team from RS1.1 Kaduna was immediately deployed to the scene.
On arrival, the team secured the area and shut down all access roads leading to the tanker to prevent further accidents. “Upon arrival, FRSC personnel promptly secured the area by closing all roads leading to the crashed tanker to prevent secondary crashes and possible fire outbreak,” the statement added.
Traffic was diverted to alternative routes to ease movement and reduce congestion within the metropolis.
The FRSC explained that “traffic diversion was swiftly put in place to ensure seamless vehicular movement and minimise congestion within the metropolis.”
Personnel of the Federal Fire Service and the Nigerian Police Force were also deployed to the scene and are working alongside the FRSC to ensure public safety.
Efforts are ongoing to evacuate the fuel content and remove the tanker from the road, thereby restoring normal traffic flow.
“No casualty was recorded as at the time of this report”, the Corps said.
The FRSC commended motorists for their cooperation during the operation and appealed for continued calm and patience.
“FRSC commends road users for their cooperation and urges motorists to remain calm, obey traffic directives, and exercise patience while recovery operations continue,” the statement added.
The corps further reaffirmed its mandate to safeguard lives and property on Nigerian roads, noting that “the corps reiterates its commitment to proactive response, effective traffic management, and the protection of lives and property on Nigerian roads.”
In a related development, a similar disaster was averted in Kogi State in October 2025 following a fuel tanker accident.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Tenimu Etuku, said the incident occurred at Crusher along the Felele Expressway when a fuel-laden truck heading to Abuja detached from its tanker, which rolled into a ditch.
