Fatal Ogun Truck Accident Kills Three Pedestrians

A plywood-laden truck has crushed three pedestrians to death after ramming into another truck at the Ota Tollgate area of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Thursday that the accident occurred at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the Scania truck, with registration number GGE 681 XD, suffered brake failure, causing it to crash into an empty truck ahead of it.

Akinbiyi explained that in the process, the truck veered off and crushed three pedestrians who were attempting to board a commercial bus at the busy bus stop.

“A fatal accident occurred at Ota Tollgate along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway,” he said. “It involved a Scania truck loaded with plywood, bearing registration number GGE 681 XD, and another empty truck with registration number SMK 795 YF.

“Eyewitness accounts indicated that the loaded truck suffered brake failure and rammed into the vehicle in front of it, tragically crushing commuters who were trying to board a bus.”

He noted that four persons were involved in the crash, adding that three—two males and one female—lost their lives, while no injuries were recorded.

The TRACE spokesperson said the affected vehicles were towed to the Papa Oscar yard for further investigation, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Ifo Mortuary.

“Traffic was initially disrupted, but with the swift intervention of TRACE operatives, the situation was brought under control after evacuation, and normal vehicular movement was restored,” he added.

Akinbiyi commiserated with the families of the deceased and advised motorists to always ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

“While TRACE sympathises with the families of the victims, motorists are again admonished to regularly inspect their vehicles, avoid night travel, wrongful overtaking, as well as reckless and dangerous driving, in view of the attendant consequences,” he said.

PUNCH Metro had earlier reported that six persons were killed and 23 others injured in a separate crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which was reportedly caused by speeding.
