Popular actress, Mercy Aigbe, sparked widespread reactions on social media following an on-stage kiss she shared with her co-actor, Vine Olugu, at the premiere of her latest film, ‘Everything Is New Again’.
The movie premiered on Wednesday, January 28, 2023, but attention quickly shifted from the film itself to a viral video showing Aigbe kissing Olugu during the event. The moment occurred as the actress, dressed in a shiny purple dress, addressed the audience and jokingly asked, “Should we play a part two?” After the crowd responded affirmatively, she leaned in and kissed her co-star, drawing loud cheers from attendees at the venue.
However, once the clip made its way online, reactions became divided, with many social media users expressing discomfort over the gesture, particularly in light of Aigbe’s marital status. Several critics questioned the appropriateness of the kiss, noting that it took place at a public event rather than on a movie set.
Elaineannebelleosei wrote, “Can’t wait to watch this today,” but Deedavid92 responded with caution, saying, “But you’re a married woman now. I beg you take it easy, o, to avoid stories that touch the heart.” Another user, Wetin I Kuku, added, “If the owner allows you, go ahead with the part, me I no go talk for your name sake and marriage sake.”
Others were more critical. Theelegantzworld commented, “That’s why most of them can’t stay in one marriage. How can a married woman be kissing another man in the name of acting? It is embarrassing and shameful.” Priscawalls speculated on possible consequences, writing, “The husband go soon lose her, the way he got her.”
Some reactions went beyond the kiss itself to raise broader moral questions. Chysom_okoli asked, “Is this even appropriate??? I mean you are not on set and you are married.” Ade_dolapoaderinsola added sarcastically, “So one can take another woman’s husband, be happily married to the he-goat, and the world will still love and salute you?”
Despite the criticism, the moment also received praise from fans who admired the chemistry between the actors. “They’re so cute,” wrote Deracynthiaa, while Aniekemeudoinyang added, “Acting aside, they look good together sha.” Others treated the incident lightly, with @josh_solange commenting, “Fine boy privilege,” and @_usa_dimaria_brand joking, “She even cover eye… omo the passion.”
Ahead of the premiere, Aigbe had shared several romantic promotional photos with Olugu on Instagram to build anticipation for the film. In one post, she wrote, “I can’t wait for you all to fall in love with our love.”
While the online debate continues, some fans have defended the actress, reminding critics that the kiss was part of artistic expression. “They’re actors na. People should eat and go sleep,” wrote Yourstrulyike.
The film stars Mercy Aigbe, Vine Olugu, Nancy Isime, Gbubemi Ejeye, Desmond Elliot, Abayomi Alvin, and Abayomi Alvin, among others.
