Tension flared at the Ifo Local Government Secretariat on Wednesday as angry residents rejected assurances by the council chairman, Mr Olamilekan Kushimo, that the evacuation of a controversial dumpsite in the area would take time, insisting that urgent action was needed to avert a public health crisis. The Edo State Government has announced plans to employ 5,400 members of a local security corps across its 18 local government areas as part of measures to strengthen grassroots security. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Security and Public Safety, Festus Ebea, at a news conference on Wednesday in Benin. Investigations into the fatal train crash on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service in Delta State on Monday have commenced, the Federal Ministry of Transportation said Wednesday, assuring of ongoing efforts to identify all injured victims.
