Where is economics in Nigeria’s elections?

A friend called me from the United States of America immediately after Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was declared winner of the presidential election, to ask whether Nigerians are actually suffering economically the way it is being projected in the media. He was surprised that people could still vote for the All Progressive Congress at the highest level of governance when it is clear they have failed economically and security wise. He reminded me of the fact that under the APC, Nigeria was declared the poverty capital of the world. He pointed out the massive depreciation of the naira, the current monetary…

As the presidential and National Assembly elections hold on Saturday, thousands of Nigerians living in communities where non-state actors such as armed separatists and terrorists are active may face automatic disenfranchisement. In many such areas, thousands of residents have fled, many have lost properties including voters cards and electoral officials, for safety reasons, may be reluctant to conduct elections in some. Security has been one of the most important talking points in this election circle. According to the Global Terrorism Index, Nigeria is the sixth most terrorised country in the world. Market data posted Thursday revealed that within the day’s business session, the local currency hit a low of N462.11 per dollar, down from N461.50. Another electoral heist?, By Wole Olaoye

Give it to the crooked politicians, they did their homework with the knowledge that the police and other law enforcement agencies would only be reactive. There is no history of political thugs brought to justice in Nigeria. They come, they disrupt, they vanish. Although many of their crimes were captured on video, everyone knew that they would never be brought to justice. “All those involved in snatching ballot boxes and committing all sorts of voter suppression crimes should be arrested and prosecuted”, declared Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former president in reaction to reported incidents of ballot disruption in Bayelsa State.…
