President Gustavo Petro on Sunday suspended a ceasefire with Colombia’s biggest drug trafficking group, accusing it of attacking civilians. “I ordered the security forces to resume all military operations against the Gulf Clan,” he said on Twitter. “I will not allow them to keep sowing distress and terror in the communities,” Petro added. The government says the clan is behind harassment and attacks on people in northwest Colombia over the past two weeks. Just before the new year, Petro’s government declared a bilateral ceasefire with several armed groups, including the Gulf Clan, National Liberation Army rebels…
Months ago, when the Independent National Electoral Commission announced its voter register listed a whopping 93.4 million potential voters, it was an exciting promise of how the elections would go. At the end of the day, the presidential election—which typically attracts more voters—ended up with an underwhelming figure. With all the raucous noise that the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party made about their “structure,” who would have thought that the eventual winner would not even have up to 10 per cent of registered voters and even less than five per cent of the estimated national population? While…

The Federal Government has raked in N10.1tn from the collection of Value Added Tax under the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). This comes against the backdrop of the advice by the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, that the incoming government should increase the VAT from the current 7.5 per cent to 10 per cent. VAT is a 7.5 per cent consumption tax administered by the Federal Inland Revenue Service when goods are purchased and services are rendered, and it is borne by the final consumer. Revenue generated from VAT is usually disbursed to the three tiers…

As Nigerians vote on Saturday to elect a new president, none of the four leading candidates presented a promising and convincing climate justice strategy, a PREMIUM TIMES review of their manifestoes has shown. A manifesto is a written statement declaring publicly the intentions, motives, or views of its issuer (candidate or political party) before an election which contains the set of policies that the candidate or party stands for and would wish to implement if elected. This is mainly a promise, an implied contract between the people and a political party or candidate, presented to the voters on which basis…
The universe has given Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar a new lease on life and, perhaps, a new approach to dating. The controversial actress battling an undisclosed ailment has suddenly burst out into her former bubbly self, which most fans have forgotten. It is perhaps the result of the donation made by Delta State senator-elect Ned Nwoko to the actress, who has been off the movie scene for five years. In a turn of events, the actress has advised young ladies to stay off other women’s husbands. Her latest post is even more significant as the actress is engulfed in a…
Kamaru Usman failed to reclaim his UFC welterweight title, losing a unanimous decision to his conqueror, Leon Edwards, early Sunday morning. Edwards vs. Usman 3 was the main event at UFC 286, and Edwards proved his win over the Nigerian Nightmare last August was no fluke, as he gave a masterclass fighting clinic to suffocate Usman’s inner moves. According to Yahoo Sports, “Edwards out-landed Usman 120-87 in significant strikes and landed 74 per cent of his significant strikes. Usman attempted 15 takedowns but landed only four and could do little with them.” Though Edwards afterwards admitted that Saturday’s fight was…
It is Thursday morning, two days before the governorship elections that will take place across Nigeria tomorrow, Saturday 18 March. I am chatting to a friend – let’s call him Dear John – who belongs to the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, my state of origin. Dear John appears to already know the results of a poll that hasn’t yet happened and confidently assures me that Magnus Abe, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate I am supporting, doesn’t stand a chance. “Magnus will come third. Beatrice Itubo [Labour Party, LP] will come second. Tonye Cole [All Progressives Congress,…
