At least five people, including a police officer, were killed on Tuesday when gunmen attacked the Abande community in the Turan district of the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, deepening concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the area. The Benue State Police Command confirmed that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), attached to the 13 Police Mobile Force in Makurdi, was among those killed during the attack. Associate Pastor Eleazar Onyenweaku of the United Evangelical Church, Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba, has slammed the Abia State Police Command for saying that no bomb or explosive was found in their church. A Kaduna-based Hassy’s Haven Foundation has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the growing burden of cancer among indigent women in Nigeria, warning that poverty, stigma and poor access to care are driving preventable deaths across the country.
