Edo Queens Football Club have emerged champions of the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League after finishing top of the Super Six tournament on Sunday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In their final match against Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens secured a goalless draw, enough to seal the title with 10 points from five games. The Benin-based side won three matches, drew one and lost one.
Coincidentally, Edo Queens won their first title in 2024 when they also sealed the title with a 1-1 draw against Bayelsa Queens.
This year, Bayelsa Queens also finished on 10 points but ended second on goal difference.
Nasarawa Amazons, who defeated Edo Queens in the opening game, finished third with eight points after playing out a goalless draw against Rivers Angels, who ended the tournament in fourth place.
The third game of the final day between FC Robo and Abia Angels ended 1-1, with the Angels finishing fifth on four points while FC Robo placed sixth with three points.
Speaking to The PUNCH, Edo Queens coach Moses Aduku commended his players for their resilience throughout the tournament. He noted that despite starting their campaign with a defeat to Nasarawa Amazons, they recovered strongly to win the Super Six title.
“It has been a rewarding season for us after winning the trophy. Despite losing the first game, the players picked themselves up and made Edo proud. I commend them,” he said.
The coach also praised the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, and the people of the state for their unwavering support throughout the season.
Enabulele told The PUNCH that the triumph was about more than just winning a trophy, stressing the importance of discovering and nurturing talents capable of making the state proud.
“I am happy that we have won. This victory is beyond winning the trophy; it is about discovering and nurturing talents for the benefit of the state,” he said.
He also thanked Governor Monday Okpebholo for the opportunity to serve, assuring him that he would continue to give his best in the role.
