Ruben Amorim has emerged as a leading contender for the vacant managerial position at AC Milan, with discussions already taking place between the club and his representatives, according to reports.
The Portuguese coach has been out of work since leaving Manchester United in January, following a difficult 14-month spell in charge at Old Trafford.
Despite his short and turbulent tenure in England, Amorim’s reputation remains strong due to his earlier success with Sporting CP, where he built one of Europe’s most admired tactical systems.
As reported by BBC Sport on Saturday, AC Milan are searching for a new head coach after parting ways with Massimiliano Allegri in May. The decision came after the club failed to secure Champions League qualification, finishing just outside the top positions following a dramatic collapse in the final weeks of the season.
Milan had looked on course for a strong finish after a key victory over rivals Inter in March left them in a promising position.
However, their form deteriorated sharply, with only three wins from their final ten matches, ultimately costing them a place in Europe’s top competition.
Alongside Amorim, several high-profile names have been linked with the role.
These include Mauricio Pochettino, currently managing the United States national team, and Oliver Glasner, who recently departed Crystal Palace after their European success.
Another former Manchester United manager, Ralf Rangnick, had also been considered early in the process.
However, he is now out of the running after committing his future to the Austria national football team until 2028.
If appointed, Amorim could quickly find himself facing familiar opposition.
AC Milan are scheduled to meet Manchester United in a pre-season fixture in Wrocław, Poland on 15 August, a match that would add an early narrative twist to his potential return to top-level management.
