The operatives of the Obalende Division of the Ogun State Police Command have successfully foiled a coordinated conspiracy to kidnap a Chinese national and arrested two principal suspects, Chinedu Onwuemena, aged 41 years, and Jimoh Ojo, aged 37 years, in connection with a planned N50,000,000 ransom demand.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Babaseyi said that the suspects were arrested on June 9, 2026, at about 5:30pm, following credible and actionable intelligence received by the divisional police officer indicating an imminent kidnapping plot along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.
He stated, “Acting on the intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised operatives of the division, including the surveillance team, to the identified axis, where the suspects were promptly intercepted and arrested, thereby thwarting the execution of the planned crime.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects had jointly conspired to abduct a Chinese national and extort a ransom of N50,000,000.
“Further findings showed that Chinedu Onwuemena, who worked within the company environment as an interpreter and driver, allegedly exploited his position to facilitate the criminal plan.
He explained that investigations have equally established that the arrested suspects did not act alone but in concert with another accomplice who is currently at large, saying that efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspect, while discreet investigations continue to unravel the full extent of the criminal network behind the conspiracy.
The case was said to have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for comprehensive and discreet investigation.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has commended the professionalism, vigilance, and swift response of the operatives of Obalende Division, whose proactive action prevented what could have resulted in a serious kidnapping incident.
The CP also acknowledged the value of timely intelligence, which once again underscores the importance of community partnership in crime prevention and security management.
He reassures residents and the business community that the command remains firmly committed to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, and the relentless pursuit of criminal elements threatening public peace and safety.
Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and continue to support the police by promptly reporting suspicious movements or activities.
