A 35-year-old woman identified as Osasere has been arrested after she was caught throwing her baby into the River Ovia in the Ovia North East Local Government Area.
In a viral video, Osasere, who was caught by fishermen and escaped being lynched, said a seer told her the baby was a python demon. The fishermen pursued and dragged her into a canoe to go in search of the baby.
Osasere explained that she gave birth to the baby five years ago, but the baby refused to walk, while her attempt to get pregnant again resulted in several miscarriages.
Osasere said her friend took her to a seer who said her five-year-old son was a python and was responsible for eating babies in her womb.
She said the seer advised her to throw the baby into the river so that she could get pregnant. Efforts to retrieve the body of the baby, as of press time, were unsuccessful.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Eno Ikoedem, revealed on Wednesday that the woman and the seer were in police custody.
She stated, “They are both in custody, and operatives are already investigating the matter.”
Also, a couple from Benue State, Charity Jacob and Monday John, have been arrested for attempting to sell a two-year-old female for N3m.
The couple was arrested at the point of handing over the baby to the buyers. It was gathered that the baby was stolen from her mother.
The state police spokesperson explained that operatives attached to the Irrua Division intercepted the two suspects in possession of a two-year-old female child near MOPO Junction, Irrua, in Edo Central.
She disclosed, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects conspired with others to unlawfully sell the child for N3m.
“Suspects are in custody, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the case.”
