A heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds has claimed the lives of two persons and destroyed several houses and property in Bara community, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The victims were identified as 50-year-old Aisha Sagir and her four-year-old granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, both residents of Unguwar Katsinawa in Bara Village.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib.
According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday following a downpour accompanied by a severe windstorm.
“Preliminary reports indicate that on June 10, 2026, Kirfi Local Government Area experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The severe weather incident resulted in the tragic loss of Aisha Sagir, 50-year-old, and her granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, 4-year-old, both of Unguwar Katsinawa, Bara Village, Kirfi LGA,” the statement read.
The police spokesperson disclosed that, apart from the loss of lives, the rainstorm destroyed several houses, livestock and other valuables estimated to be worth millions of naira.
He added that operatives attached to the Kirfi Divisional Police Headquarters had visited the affected area to assess the extent of the damage and maintain law and order.
Habib said the commissioner of police in the state, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had extended his condolences to the government and people of Kirfi Local Government Area over the disaster.
He noted that the police commissioner expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
“The Commissioner of Police expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and the entire people of Kirfi LGA. He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” the statement added.
The command further assured residents that it would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to support disaster response efforts and safeguard lives and property across the state.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season and promptly report emergencies to security agencies for swift intervention.
