At least four people have been confirmed dead after a Golf Wagon conveying about 10 passengers crashed into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at about 7:10 pm, when the Kano State Fire Service received an emergency call from one Suleman reporting the crash.
According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the vehicle was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State when the accident occurred.
“The Fire Service Branch in Danbatta Local Government Area received an emergency call at about 7:10 pm from one Suleman reporting the crash of a Golf Wagon with an unknown registration number,” the statement said.
The vehicle reportedly plunged into Tomas Dam, leaving all 10 occupants trapped.
Fire Service personnel from the Danbatta station were quickly deployed to the scene and successfully rescued all the victims from the submerged vehicle.
However, four of the victims were found unconscious and were later confirmed dead at the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, about 35 years old, and Fatima Danlami, about 40 years old, while two other victims had yet to be identified as of the time of filing this report.
All the victims were taken to Danbatta General Hospital for medical attention and other necessary procedures.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a burst tyre caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, leading to the crash into the dam.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed sadness over the incident and urged motorists to drive with caution.
He also called on relevant authorities to urgently repair the Tomas Dam embankment to prevent future loss of lives and property.
